Sustainability

Sustainability

We all play an essential role in reducing our personal and corporate carbon footprints. Climate change can no longer be ignored. While some companies are doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint, far more are doing very little to nothing!

The average American citizen has a carbon footprint of 15 – 20 metric tons annually.  Corporate America’s carbon footprint depends on the industry.  Energy Design Engineers work primarily in manufacturing, distribution, food, schools, and office buildings. While it varies, their carbon footprints start at 100 – 500 tons of carbon emissions annually, and 10% of our clients have carbon footprints that are 3 – 5 times larger.

Sustainability can not be overstated as businesses increasingly recognize their profound impact on the environment, society, and the long-term visibility of their operations. Sustainability is a strategic imperative for companies aiming to thrive in a rapidly changing global landscape.

As Corporate America continues to evolve, integrating sustainability into business strategies is a moral obligation and a key driver for innovation, successful hiring, competitiveness, and enduring success in the 21st century.

Where do all the greenhouse gases come from:

  • 70% from electric power generation
  • 20% from transportation
  • 10% from agriculture & Others

Electric Power: Reducing energy waste is one of the most important and beneficial steps in reducing greenhouse gases. This is closely followed by replacing traditional coal-fired electric power plants with green energy production. The largest producers of CO2 are coal-fired electric power plants, where 73% of the global CO2 is produced. Today (2023), 30% of global energy production is being produced by wind, solar, and Hydropower.

Energy Design Engineers believe that by implementing new technologies available today, the USA can further reduce its energy waste by 20% plus. This, coupled with the elimination of coal-fired electric power plants and getting our federal government behind larger federal tax deductions for solar and battery storage installation, will provide significant results and set an example for the rest of the world to follow.

Interesting Facts

  1. You make a difference!  Start making changes in your life and at home to reduce your carbon footprint and that of your family.
  2. A 100MW solar farm in the Midwest can produce 120 – 150K MWh per energy, enough to supply 12,000 homes. This can be generated with 174 – 350W panels in the Midwest!
  3. Network Lighting Controls (NLC) help reduce commercial lighting costs by 30 – 40%. Yet, even though this technology has been around for 15 years, 95% of American LED installations across all sectors do not have NLC.
  4. Technologies available today in the USA will reduce 20 – 25% of the energy we use today in commercial and residential markets.
  5. There are 1.4 million residential buildings in the USA. What if our federal government funded solar for each building? This solar system would generate over 1.1 trillion kWh annually, enough energy to supply 25% of the total electricity consumed in the USA (2023).

Transportation

We are progressing thanks to the electrification of cars, trucks, semis, trains, and a few other modes of transportation (2023).  Today, only 3% of all vehicles globally are electric.  There is good news over the following countries are leading the way with electric vehicle sales (2023):

  • China – 22% of all new vehicles are fully electric
  • Netherlands – 18% of all new cars are fully electric
  • Germany – 15% of all new cars are fully electric
  • USA – 8% of all new cars are fully electric

Agriculture: Increasingly, farmers are turning to anaerobic digestion to recycle animal waste and generate energy for their farms. Biogas is produced, captured, and stored as a renewable energy source. Farmers can further boost energy production by generating heat and electricity through combustion in a boiler or generator. After digestion, the remaining byproduct is a nutrient-rich crop fertilizer, creating a sustainable cycle.

Farmers can significantly reduce energy waste by upgrading the efficiency and technology of their equipment, adopting solar and battery storage, optimizing daily operations, purchasing electric tractors, and moving away from diesel-powered tractors.

Industry: Today’s industrial manufacturing market is among the largest producers of CO2. Over the past 20 years, new technology/software and equipment have significantly reduced this sector’s carbon footprint. Unfortunately, the cost of this change, or ROI, has persuaded far too many businesses to ignore these technologies.
