What every company need to know about compressed air leaks
At Energy Design Engineers, we specialize in helping businesses identify and fix compressed air leaks, ultimately saving them thousands of dollars annually on energy costs. If you’re considering a compressed air leak audit but have questions about the process, here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Compressed Air Leak Audit?
A compressed air leak audit is a thorough inspection of your facility’s compressed air system using ultrasonic leak detection technology. Our trained auditors identify, tag, and document all leaks, providing a detailed report that includes the volume of air lost (CFM), cost estimates, and photographic evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Leak Audits
1. How much does the leak audit cost?
Our ultrasonic leak detection audit comes at no cost to you. Delta does not pay us for the audit itself. The service includes:
✔ Bright-colored tags marking all detected leaks
✔ A comprehensive audit report detailing all leaks, their locations, and their financial impact
2. What is the relationship between Energy Design Engineers and DTE?
We have been a designated Trade Ally with DTE for over a decade. As a Trade Ally, we work closely with DTE on various energy efficiency projects, and they refer businesses to us when needed.
3. What documents need to be signed before the audit?
Only one document from DTE is required. This document states that you’ve chosen Energy Design Engineers for your leak audit and agree to have the utility rebate paid to us for completing the work.
4. How does an Energy Design Engineers leak audit differ from our maintenance team fixing leaks on their own?
While your maintenance team may find and repair obvious leaks, our ultrasonic leak detection identifies non-audible leaks, which often make up 60-70% of total air leaks in a facility. Many of these non-audible leaks cost between $500 – $600 annually each. Our auditors ensure that no costly leaks go undetected.
5. When can we start fixing our leaks?
Immediately after you receive our detailed leak audit report.
6. How long does it take to receive the report?
Typically, 2-5 business days after our auditors complete the inspection.
7. How much can we realistically save from a leak audit?
While savings vary, we estimate that businesses with the following conditions can save over $25,000 per year:
- 5,000+ compressor operating hours per year
- 100-HP fixed-speed primary compressor
- Energy costs of $0.10/kWh or higher
- No ultrasonic leak detection audit in the past 12 months
8. Will the audit require us to shut down our equipment?
No, we prefer that your facility is in full production mode during the audit to accurately identify leaks under normal operating conditions.
9. Are your leak auditors trained in factory and manufacturing safety?
Yes, our team has over 50 years of combined experience working in industrial environments, ensuring safety compliance at all times.
