Reduce Energy Waste
The US Department of Energy reports that over 20% of the energy costs of a commercial building arise from lighting. They predict that over the next 10 years, over 5 million businesses will make the switch to LED lighting. Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on reducing energy waste in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save about 348 TWh of electricity (compared to no LED use). This is the equivalent annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each), and a total savings of more than $30 billion at today’s electricity prices.
At Energy Design Engineers, we have taken reducing energy waste a step further through the use of lighting controls. We are reducing energy waste in office buildings by 25%, manufacturing plants by 30%, and by 40% in warehouse and distribution centers.
