Heat Recovery (Waste Heat)

Waste Heat Recovery is the green energy of the future. Most of our clients have yet to learn how much electric energy we can generate from their waste heat. At Energy Design Engineers, waste heat recovery is more than helping our clients save money. This work is integral to who we are and what wakes us up at night. While everyone is responsible for being more sustainable, it is an essential part of our mission that we live out daily.
Companies today have to do more with less, and waste heat allows them to do just that. Our “Heat Engine” design can generate up to 10 megawatts of continuous renewable green energy from waste heat. A large heat recovery project can create more power than the average solar farm (5 megawatts). DTE (utility) has a 360-acre solar farm in Lapeer, Michigan that generates 48 megawatts to give you some sense of scale to the amount of power generated from waste heat.

Reclaiming your waste heat provides the following benefits

  • Energy Savings: Heat recovery systems capture and reuse waste heat from various processes or systems within your facility. Instead of letting this heat dissipate into the environment, it’s harnessed and repurposed for heating water, creating electricity and other purposes.
  • Lower Operating Costs: The company saves monthly money by using less energy to operate its business. As the cost of electric power continues to increase, this investment in waste heat recovery becomes even more essential and saves even more money with each year’s rising energy costs.
  • Environmental Benefits: Heat recovery saves money and reduces your operations’ environmental impact. Decarbonizing your building is a big step forward with your heat recovery project.
  • Long-Term Investment: While installing heat recovery systems will require an initial investment, the long-term benefits far outweigh the upfront costs. These systems have a relatively long lifespan and continue to deliver energy savings over many years.  As energy rates continue rising, you will not have to pay for some of those increasing costs because you are generating green energy at your facility.
  • Resilience and Reliability: Heat recovery systems can improve the strength and reliability of your operations by providing an additional energy source. In case of disruptions or fluctuations in the primary energy supply, having a heat recovery system ensures continuity in your energy supply.
  • Large Utility and Federal Incentives/Rebates: Today (2023), if you can generate green energy (renewable), substantial sums of money are available to pay for part of the project costs.
